You Cannot End Sex Trafficking Without Ending the Demand
Protect the exploited. Hold buyers accountable. Dismantle the marketplace.
For years, the fight against sex trafficking has focused heavily on rescuing victims and prosecuting traffickers. Both are essential.
But if we never confront the people purchasing access to another human being’s body, the marketplace remains open. Traffickers will continue finding vulnerable women and children to supply it.
Where there is demand, exploitation follows.
Exodus Cry recently released a powerful three-minute video explaining a proven approach to reducing that demand: the Survivor Model, sometimes called the Nordic or Equality Model.
More than 25 years ago, Sweden changed how it addressed prostitution. Rather than punishing those being exploited, the law targeted the purchase of sex while offering support and pathways out for individuals caught in the sex trade.
The principle is simple:
Protect the exploited. Hold buyers and exploiters accountable. Reduce the demand.
We Have Been Fighting From the Wrong End
Too often, prostituted and trafficked individuals are arrested, stigmatized, or treated as criminals while the people purchasing them remain hidden and largely unchallenged.
That is not justice.
Many people in the commercial sex trade entered through childhood abuse, grooming, poverty, addiction, coercion, homelessness, or previous exploitation. Their vulnerability is precisely what predators, buyers, and traffickers monetize.
As I tell my kids and anyone who listen, people don't grow up aspiring to be prostitutes or "sex actors". Most of the people trapped in these situations were exploited at young ages.
We cannot claim to oppose trafficking while tolerating the marketplace that sustains it.
We cannot continue treating the person being purchased as the problem while ignoring the person creating the demand.
And we cannot separate prostitution from the wider culture of pornography, sexual entitlement, and consumption that trains people to view human beings as products.
Pornography conditions the mind, distorts desire, and trains us to consume people rather than honor them as sacred.
This Is More Than a Criminal-Justice Problem
Sex trafficking is the brutal end of a much deeper cultural and spiritual crisis.
Our culture has normalized the belief that sexual access is a commodity, that consent alone makes every sexual transaction acceptable, and that personal freedom matters more than the human cost of our choices.
But no person was created to be purchased.
Every woman, man, and child bears the image of God. Human dignity cannot be bought, sold, rented, downloaded, or consumed.
This is why ending trafficking requires more than rescuing people after they have been exploited. It requires confronting the beliefs and behaviors that make exploitation profitable.
It means bening honest about how devastating pornography is.
It means addressing sexual entitlement.
It means teaching boys and men that buying another human being is neither harmless nor inevitable.
It means creating meaningful exit services for those who have been exploited.
It means holding buyers, pimps, traffickers, websites, and corporations accountable when they facilitate or profit from sexual exploitation.
Accountability and Restoration Belong Together
Sacred Stewardship believes justice and compassion are not opposing values.
Survivors deserve protection, healing, resources, and pathways to freedom. Buyers and exploiters must be held accountable. Those willing to repent and change must also be offered pathways toward transformation.
Shame alone will not heal survivors or change offenders. But grace without accountability leaves vulnerable people in danger.
Real restoration requires truth, repentance, justice, healing, and a genuine turning away from the behaviors that cause harm.
The Church must be willing to lead this conversation, not only after trafficking occurs, but before demand is formed.
We must disciple children in sexual integrity, equip parents to talk honestly about pornography and exploitation, help adults confront their own sexual brokenness, and proclaim that freedom is possible through Jesus Christ.
What We Can Do Now

Rescue matters. Prevention matters. Accountability matters.
If we are serious about ending sex trafficking, we must stop managing its consequences while leaving its marketplace intact.
Children are sacred. People are not commodities. Human beings are not products.
It is time to end the demand.
Scripture
“Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed.”
~Isaiah 1:17
“But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck, and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.”
~Matthew 18:6
A Prayer to End the Demand
Father,
We grieve the buying, selling, and exploitation of people created in Your image. We lift before You every child, woman, and man trapped in trafficking and the commercial sex trade. Bring protection, rescue, healing, justice, and lasting restoration.
Expose the systems, businesses, technologies, and individuals profiting from exploitation. Give lawmakers, prosecutors, judges, and law enforcement officials courage to hold buyers and traffickers accountable while protecting those who have been exploited.
Confront the sexual brokenness within our culture and within our own hearts. Break the power of pornography, entitlement, greed, secrecy, and lust. Bring buyers to repentance and create pathways through which they can turn from harm and find true freedom in Christ.
Awaken Your Church. Give pastors the courage to speak truth, parents the wisdom to disciple their children, and men the conviction to protect rather than consume. Teach us to see every person as sacred - not as a product, an image, or a body to be used.
Make us faithful stewards of truth, justice, freedom, and human dignity.
In the name of Jesus,
Amen.
Protect Children. Strengthen Families. Restore Human Flourishing.
